Maybe She Didn’t Need to Buy Those Cigarettes

She walks up to the counter, distraught face pointing southern to the ground. Then the counting begins. Four one dollar bills, several quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. It was awkward for her. Embarrassing even.

“$7.23 on pump 11 and a pack of Newport’s. Please.”

Her words like nails on a chalkboard to the register attendant and the other person waiting…
